The topic of church and state is a very tricky one. The church teaches us the way we should all live our lives and the State also has its own rules and regualations for us as well. For most of us its a choice in whether or not we follow the teachings of the church. Since we are living in a state of choices, it is then up to us to choose our leaders who has proven themselves in the past and is still doing so both on ethical and moral issues.
